There was a time when writing in a book felt almost forbidden. Pages were meant to remain pristine, spines unbroken, and margins untouched.
Now, more readers are embracing a different approach.
Books are being filled with colorful tabs, favorite passages are being highlighted, and handwritten reactions are finding their way into the margins. Instead of simply finishing a story and placing it back on the shelf, readers are creating a personal record of how that story made them feel.
At the center of it all is the annotation kit.
Typically filled with sticky notes, index tabs, highlighters, and gel pens, these coordinated kits make it easy to organize your thoughts—or simply document every moment that made you laugh, cry, swoon, or stare at the page in complete disbelief.
01
Why Readers Are Reaching for Annotation Kits
Annotation gives readers a way to slow down and engage more intentionally with a book.
You might highlight a beautifully written sentence, tab an important clue, mark a favorite romantic moment, or leave a note for your future self. There is no official formula and no requirement to turn every reading session into a literary analysis.
For pleasure readers, annotation can be entirely emotional.
The colors do not matter nearly as much as the memories attached to them. When you return to the book months or years later, those small marks can bring you right back to your first reading experience.

02
A Practical Tool for Students
Annotation kits are also useful for students who prefer working with physical books, printed articles, or study materials.
Different colors can help separate key ideas, definitions, questions, themes, and supporting information. Sticky notes provide space for longer observations without crowding the page, while index tabs make important sections easier to locate later.
The key is to keep the system manageable. If every sentence is highlighted, nothing truly stands out. A few clearly defined colors and categories can make the process more useful and far less overwhelming.
Students should always confirm that they are permitted to write in or attach tabs to a book before annotating it—especially when using borrowed textbooks or library books.
03
Perfect for Book-Club Gifting
If you are searching for a book-club gift that feels thoughtful without being overly complicated, an annotation kit is an easy choice.
Pair one with your club's next selection, place it inside a small gift bag, or set a kit at each seat during your next meeting. It is practical, pretty, and relevant to the reason everyone is gathering in the first place: the books.
Annotation kits can also make your discussions more engaging. Members can use tabs to mark favorite quotes, confusing moments, suspicious characters, romantic tension, or scenes they cannot wait to discuss.
For an especially thoughtful gift, include a small card suggesting a color key inspired by the book.
04
What to Look for in an Annotation Kit
The right kit depends on how you like to read and what you actually plan to use.
Index tabs in colors you can easily distinguish.
Sticky notes for longer thoughts and reactions.
Highlighters that feel comfortable in your hand.
Gel pens for margin notes or journaling.
A storage case or pouch if you plan to carry the kit with you.
If preserving your books is important to you, test pens and highlighters on a back page before using them throughout the book. Paper thickness and ink performance can vary from one book to another.
You can also annotate without permanently marking the page. Transparent sticky notes and removable tabs are helpful options for readers who prefer a cleaner copy or are not ready to commit ink to paper.

Make the book your own
There is no correct way to annotate a book.
You can create an elaborate color-coded system, use one highlighter for everything you love, or place a tab beside every scene you want to revisit. Your pages can be neat and coordinated or filled with spontaneous reactions written in the moment.
The purpose is not to make your book look perfect. It is to make the reading experience feel more personal.
Because sometimes finishing the book is only part of the story. The notes, highlights, and tiny pastel tabs left behind become a record of everything you felt along the way.
